My photography style is about capturing a moment, an emotion. During a photo shoot, I coach my clients in posing and in expressing a feeling. But my goal is to make it look natural. If your subject is a child, being able to tell a joke is a must! I’m not really good at them, so I use the ones my son tells me, or I find some online.
In this photo shoot, Diego, the youngest one, was a ham! He loved posing, and smiled easily. His big brother Sebastian was a little shy, but he still listened to my directions. In the image on the left, I asked Diego to tell a joke to Sebastian, and it worked! It might not have been huge, cheesy grins, but that’s not what I was looking for. I absolutely LOVE this image; the boys look comfortable and natural.
Another one of my favorite images was taken on Mahalia and Willie’s wedding day, in August 2012. First, let me tell you that it took a lot of convincing from them before I accepted to shoot their wedding! I’ve never done a wedding on my own before, and I was terrified to mess up their big day. But the thing is, Mahalia & Willie believed in me in a way that nobody else did. So it was an honor to immortalize their wedding.
The image on the left is beautiful (of course, I’m going to say that!) I love it, but it’s actually the image below that I absolutely love. It’s sort of a “behind-the-scene” shot: we were on our way to the church, and Mahalia has been really stressed out about being late (which is totally natural for a bride!). In the limo, she finally calmed down as her bridesmaids said prayers for her and her groom.
I love this image because it seems like the bride realized that THE moment was coming. Nothing else mattered, none of the wedding details. What truly mattered was that she was going to marry the love of her life.
I love that my pictures show emotions, and that the children, grandchildren… (and so on) of Mahalia & Willie, Sebastian & Diego, and of all my clients will get more than a pretty picture, but truly a moment in life.
